What the heck is happening? Where is all of your stock?
Before starting Mr. Draper I was an Air Force Officer. After leaving the Air Force I was transferred into the reserves. In late 2019, as the fires in Australia were developing, I was contacted and asked if I could help. The end result is that I received an official call up and will be away from early January until July 2020. Nowhere too dangerous, thankfully, rather working out of an embassy overseas to free up resources back home. It is going to be hard to be away from family but thankfully I can Facetime.
Rather than placing the burden of sewing, packing and shipping orders on my partner, who is already looking after our lil one, I’ve removed stock and have closed orders until I return.
Am I worried about putting the business on hold and losing momentum? Not really. I’ve had some time to reflect and chat to a mentor about it and I’m actually really comfortable with the whole situation. I founded Mr. Draper with the philosophy of 1000 True Fans in mind and I think I’m nearing that point. I have a really good relationship with my customers, and I think they understand. We all get curve balls thrown at us from time to time, and the bonus of being a small debt-free business is that I don’t have the stress of growing or achieving any magical revenue numbers. Instead, I can take my time, deal with the curve balls as they get thrown, and allow life to get in the way.
Well that’s it from me for probably the next six or seven months(!) Thank you so much for your support in 2019. I hope you get a break over the holiday period. For folks in the southern hemisphere, enjoy some beach time - and stay safe. If you need anything, I’m only ever an email away.
